How to Measure Your Roof

In order to supply you with a quotation for your roof's home, we must have measurements for your roof.

The easiest way to get your home's measurements is to look in the Yellow Pages and find a roofing contractor who will measure your home for free. Then, you can send in your measurements for a price quotation.

Or, you can do the measurements yourself. There is nothing to it! You won't even have to climb up on your roof! All measurements can be done from ground level using a level, a yardstick and a tape measure.

The first thing that will be needed it the roof's slope or pitch.

(Note: In order for a Rustic Shingle roof to be used on your home, it must have a minimum of a 3:12 slope or pitch.)

Slope is defined for roofs as equal to the number of inches the roof rises ("rise") for every foot of horizontal travel ("run".)

You may measure slope from a ladder at a gable.

    You will need
  • A 3-foot level.
  • A yardstick.

Hold the yardstick tight to the end of the level (the end is square so that the level and yardstick are at right angles.) Hold the level so that it's "dead level", and adjust the yardstick until it touches the roof. Read the yardstick to find the inches of slope in 3 feet (the length of the level.)

Divide by three to get slope in inches per foot. (Because the level is 3 feet long, you measured the rise per 36 inches. To get rise per foot, the reading must be divided by 3.)

Different areas of your roof can have different slopes or pitches. As examples:

A 3:12 Pitch is a shallow pitch.

A 6:12 pitch is a medium pitch.

A 9:12 pitch is a steep pitch.

A 12:12 pitch is a very steep pitch.

The last thing that will be needed it the roof's total square footage.

In order to estimate the number of shingles and related accessories you will need, the total square footage of the roof must be known. Just measure the length and width of each section on your roof. This can be done using a tape measure on the ground. Roof surfaces are measured in "squares" which is equal to 100 square feet.

Make a outline of your roof on paper.
1. Go all the way around your house and fill in your outline with your measurements making sure to account for overhang.
2. Divide your roof and write your calculations down.

Divide the total square footage by 100 to get the number of squares.
